Job Description

Elementary Children’s Director

Classification:           Director, Regular Full-Time; Salaried Exempt

Purpose:  The primary purpose of this position is to oversee the operations of Elementary Children’s Ministry (1st through 6th grades) as a spiritual and Biblical leader that empowers and releases lay leaders for ministry. The Director will partner with parents to help them be the spiritual leaders of their families. The Director will do this by using good communication, organization, and with a nurturing and discerning spirit.

Responsibilities:

  • General
  • Provide organizational and spiritual leadership for the Elementary Children’s ministry and associated ministry teams.
  • Create age appropriate worship and learning environments which captivate children into relationship with God and lead them into a transforming relationship with Christ.
  • Ensure age appropriate, authentic teaching and equipping opportunities that engage children to live and serve like Jesus and which are essential for missional living (i.e. character, knowledge, and skill) in Children’s Ministry.
  • Oversee and coordinate educational, spiritual growth activities, and curriculum to ensure effective weekly gatherings, including Sunday mornings and weekday evenings, working in partnership with staff and lay leaders.
  • Creatively engage children to participate in discipleship opportunities.
  • Identify and develop ministry specific missional opportunities to teach and engage children about missional living.
  • Speak publicly at events or weekly programs to large groups.
  • Create, organize, plan and communicate large-scale ministry events for children and for families on a routine basis.
  • Maintain partnerships with area ministries to further the children’s ministry’s effectiveness in the community.
  • Meet with and support families from the preschool and children’s ministry.
  • Offer loving care to children who may struggle with difficult issues, including referring them and/or parents to care-giving resources as appropriate.
  • Lead Baptism class when needed.

 

  • Staff Supervision
    • Mentor ministry staff to empower, encourage, and enable their development and growth in their assigned areas of ministry.
    • Supervise, train, and coach direct reports to implement and effectively accomplish the work of the ministry assigned.
    • Develop and effectively communicate performance expectations, develop appropriate accountability processes, conduct performance reviews at least annually, and create professional development plans for each direct report.
    • Work with and assist the Operations staff in areas of personnel management (i.e. hiring process, benefits, compensation, disciplinary situations, etc.).
    • Understand and operate within the policies and processes outlined in the Employee Handbook to ensure consistent application throughout the church.
    • Provide pastoral care to staff.

 

  • Lay Leaders and Volunteers
  • Build ministry capacity through the recruitment and training of lay leaders and volunteers to ensure the effective implementation of ministry objectives, goals and action plans.
  • Equip, disciple, coach, and supervise ministry lay leaders and volunteers so they may grow like Christ and effectively use their giftedness in God’s church.
  • Develop, communicate and implement performance expectations and appropriate accountability processes for outreach ministry lay leaders to accomplish missional goals.

 

  • Financial Management
    • Provide input and assist with the creation of operating and capital budgets which are fully integrated with the church’s mission, vision, and strategies.
    • In the spirit of stewardship, manage labor and spending within approved budgeted parameters and monitor spending at least monthly.
    • Understand and operate within church policies and processes regarding all financial transactions of the church.

  • Convey MCC’s Christian message and carry out its mission by exemplifying and promoting biblical values and fostering life-giving relationships with congregants, visitors, vendors and other staff, while serving in this ministry role.  Such actions include offering prayer, encouragement and comfort in both personal and work relationships, leading others toward Christian maturity and as applicable faithfully teaching the Word of God.
  • Give full commitment in word and deed to support the faith tenants and cultural expectations of MCC.
  • Value and develop strong/positive relationships via teams comprised of church staff, ministry partners, families, and lay leadership.

Performance Expectations:

  1. Parents are supported and realizing their role as spiritual leaders to their children by having accountability, tools and training available to them.
  2. Children understand that God created them, loves them and wants to be their forever friend. They are confident in this knowledge and pursue a relationship with Him.
  3. Children Ministry leaders (staff and volunteers) grow into greater levels of interdependence, knowledge, skills and effectiveness in their roles due to coaching, equipping and support.

 Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and Experience
    • Bachelor’s degree in education or children’s ministry is required.
    • Three years of experience working in elementary children’s ministry is preferred
    • Knowledge of developmental and faith stages for elementary age children and the ability to strategically choose and implement appropriate programming for those stages is essential
    • Pursues an intimate relationship with Christ with intensity, lives the message he/she teaches, devoted prayer life
    • Committed to evangelism as evidenced by teaching, lifestyle and support of missions.
    • We prefer the candidate be married with children with demonstrated discipleship within his/her home.
