Job Description

Overall Position Description

The Student Ministries Pastor is responsible for the oversight and implementation of all aspects related to the ministry of students in grades 6-12 and student ministry staff. He maintains a firm grasp on the mission, vision, and pathway of the church, ensuring that the student ministry is properly aligned and integrated with the overall church direction. The Journey Bible Church Student Minister will also lead the student ministries staff and disciple volunteers, parents, and students with the goal of awakening students to passionately follow Jesus.

 Personal Qualifications

  • Has a strong and vibrant walk with Jesus Christ
  • Has a heart for students, to see them know Jesus, passionately follow Him, and make him known in the world around them
  • Is a strong teacher/preacher of God’s Word
  • Is a disciple-maker: someone who operates with an intentional discipleship strategy
  • Is a leader: someone who can lead and develop a staff team, adult leaders, and students
  • Is relational: someone who values relationships with students and parents
  • Portrays a commitment to longevity
  • Is organized and detail oriented
  • Is a seasoned, mature leader, who can come alongside and minister to/lead parents
  • Has experience building & leading teams
  • Is relatable, approachable, and values knowing the students in the ministry
  • Is family focused and is a strong biblical leader of their family, with devotion and care for their spouse

 Experience and Education Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of experience in Student Ministry leadership and/or Pastoral Leadership at a church of 750 or larger
  • Willing to pursue a Master's/Seminary Degree (or has already obtained one)

Member of Journey Bible Church Pastoral/Staff team

  • Be a member of Journey Bible Church
  • Attend and participate in all appropriate staff and team meetings/gatherings
  • Participate in weekend service elements when needed (baptisms, communion, hosting, etc.)
  • Plan and maintain the approved annual budget for the student ministry

 Leading Student Ministry Staff

  • Shepherd, train, equip and empower younger staff as they minister to & disciple students
  • Directly involved in the recruitment and development of incoming student ministry staff
  • Meet regularly with student ministry team to provide vision, focus and direction as they carry out the week to week aspects of the ministry

Ministry to Students

  • Connect & engage with students in an effort to shepherd and care for them
  • Faithfully & regularly preach the gospel
  • Develop and implement weekly student programming for students in both large and small group settings
  • Oversee the week to week teaching of the student ministry
  • Faithfully handle God’s Word in testimony, teaching, training & conversation
  • Encourage, train and exhort students in the living out of their faith in their families, schools, work places, relationships and other life-related matters
  • Work to plug students into the main body of Journey Bible Church through attending Sunday morning services and serving in some capacity (Journey Kids, Greeter, Tech Team, Worship Team, etc.)
  • Oversee, plan and participate regularly in scheduled student ministry functions (events, retreats, etc.)
  • Develop, oversee and lead local outreach opportunities for students
  • Develop, oversee and lead mission trip opportunities for students (local and/or global)
  • Be available to students that may need personal or spiritual counsel
  • Pray regularly for the students

 Ministry to Parents

  • Regularly encourage parents to fulfill their God-given parental responsibilities
  • Come alongside parents to equip them as they disciple their students
  • Clearly communicate with parents on a regular basis to keep them informed about student ministry events and vision
  • Provide counsel, when needed, to parents of students
  • Pray regularly for the parents.

 Ministry to Volunteer Leaders

  • Continually be looking for and recruiting new leaders for the student ministry
  • Shepherd, train, equip & empower leaders to disciple students
  • Define and communicate strategic vision, values, and goals to volunteers on a regular basis
  • Ensure that all leaders meet the requirements set out by Journey Bible Church for volunteer leadership.
  • Meet regularly with leaders outside of normal program times to encourage them & provide them with an opportunity to give feedback/ideas
  • Pray regularly for volunteer leaders
