Job Description

The Director of Children’s Ministries will be the primary leader for our ministries with Children and their families.  The Director will serve the congregation by developing, coordinating and administering a comprehensive and expanding ministry of Christian Education and Formation for children (Infant through 5th grade) of the Church and surrounding community and providing leadership to and supervision of volunteers involved with this ministry.  

The Director of Children’s Ministries shall:

  • Work cooperatively with clergy, program staff and appropriate lay leadership to ensure that Children’s ministry opportunities support and strengthen the congregational mission, vision, and goals.
  • Design ministries and programs for Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Faith Development , Age Level special events and a Sunday evening Program (currently called Bible Explorers) including: 
    • Developing or selecting curriculum for each age level, birth through 5th grade
    • Recruiting and training of volunteers
    • Actively following-up with families and children to help them get and stay connected
    • Extending hospitality to new families and helping them connect with the church family.
    • Helping the children and their families grow spiritually.
  • Plan and organize intergenerational and community events appropriate to the Seasons of the Church year and School Calendars (Currently including Trunk-Or-Treat, Hanging of the Greens, Children’s Nativity, Palm Sunday Easter Extravaganza).
  • Ensure integration of mission/service opportunities for children and their families into curriculum and special events.
  • In cooperation with Ministry Support staff, maintain up-to-date rosters and attendance figures for all classes and programs.
  • Serve as Wesley Memorial’s primary contact with new babies and their families, accompanying them through the steps toward Baptism.
  • In cooperation with clergy and appropriate staff, ensure that new visitors and new members feel welcome and have opportunities to build relationships with current children and their families.
  • In consultation with the clergy staff, provide opportunities for children and families to participate in worship.
  • In conjunction with Director of Wesley Memorial School and Director for Student Ministries, ensure that educational classes and workshops on a variety of subjects are available for parents, grandparents and other caregivers.
  • Serve as lead staff member for development of Safe Sanctuaries Policies, maintenance of rosters and provision of training opportunities. Ensure compliance with Safe Sanctuaries policies for all activities.
  • Participate in budget planning and monitoring for Children’s Ministries.
  • Ensure that opportunities are publicized to congregation and community through a variety of channels.
  • Demonstrate a desire to continually grow in your own faith as a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ
  • Serve as the primary staff liaison to the Children’s Ministries Team and will attend the Church Council and staff meetings.
  • Serve as an ex officio member of the Wesley Memorial School Board of Directors to ensure connectivity between the two programs and as the staff liaison to Girl Scout programs.
  • Other duties assigned by the Senior Pastor and/or Staff Parish Relations Team.

Pastoral Care

  • Provide pastoral care to children and their families as appropriate and in consultation with the Senior Pastor.

Reports to:

  • The Director of Children’s Ministries will be supported by and accountable to the Senior Pastor and Staff-Parish Relations Team (SPRT).

General Qualifications

  • Demonstrates a commitment to the Christian faith and to serving God through the faith formation of children, as well as an acceptance of the doctrine and polity of the United Methodist Church.
  • Takes initiative, is dependable, and punctual.
  • Continues to learn and grow – attends continuing education, training and certification programs, as needed.
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal and conflict management skills.
  • Able to work flexible hours.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality.

Specific Qualifications

  • BA or equivalent in Education/Christian Education.  MA preferred.
  • Previous significant, successful experience in developing children and family programs in medium or large congregational setting.
  • Knowledge of theory and techniques required to manage and maintain a vital children’s ministry in a large congregation.
  • Current experience in the recruitment, development and management of a significant number of volunteers.
  • Knowledge of planning, coordination and execution of basic business functions.
  • Requires sitting, standing and the ability to lift, carry, move, and/or position objects frequently weighing up to 20 pounds and infrequently weighing more than 20 pounds.
